While Liverpool and Arsenal command the weekend spotlight, another competition is inviting fans across Africa to make their voices heard.
The SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month celebrates the outstanding contributions of African footballers in the Premier League, giving supporters across the continent the opportunity to help decide which star deserves monthly recognition.
Launched in September, the initiative is a pan-African fan-voted award accessible across MultiChoice markets, including Francophone clusters.
It places supporters at the heart of the conversation, creating a platform to celebrate African talent on one of the world’s biggest football stages.
The first two winners have already been crowned – and the race for the next award is beginning to take shape.
- The First Winner: Bryan Mbeumo Sets the Standard
Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo claimed the inaugural SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month award for August 2026.
Mbeumo made an immediate impression at the start of the season, with his memorable lobbed finish in a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town becoming a standout moment. His direct attacking play, relentless running and ability to create danger helped him win the support of fans across Africa.
His victory set the tone for an award built around the performances that matter to supporters – and the power of fans to decide who deserves the recognition.
- September Belongs to Antoine Semenyo
Ghana international Antoine Semenyo followed Mbeumo by winning the September award after an outstanding month for Manchester City.
Semenyo recorded two goals and two assists across three Premier League matches in September, making a decisive contribution to City’s campaign.
His performances included a goal contribution in a narrow victory over Coventry City and a standout display against Sunderland, when he scored twice and helped create another goal in a thrilling 5-3 win.
Semenyo secured 66.83% of the fan vote, finishing ahead of the other nominees and underlining the enthusiasm with which supporters across Africa have embraced the new award.
Two months. Two winners. And a growing platform for African football’s biggest Premier League stories.
But who will be next?
Who is making a case for October?
The October race is beginning to take shape, with several African players producing encouraging returns in recent Premier League appearances.
While the official shortlist has not yet been confirmed, a number of names are already worth watching as the month progresses.
Bryan Mbeumo has continued to make his presence felt, with two goals across two games in the current assessment period. Having won the inaugural award, he will be a familiar name for fans watching the emerging contenders.
Nicolas Jackson, who was also among September’s nominees, has registered one goal in two games and remains a player to watch.
Omar Marmoush has also found the net once in two games, while Brandon Thomas-Asante has delivered two assists in two appearances.
Alex Iwobi has added a goal in two games, and Abdoul Ouattara has recorded one goal and one assist across two games.
These early returns offer plenty for fans to debate as the next voting round approaches. The eventual shortlist will be determined through the award’s selection process, based on performances during the month.
The question is no longer whether African players are shaping the Premier League story. It is which of them will make the strongest case for the next crown.
You pick. Africa decides.
The SuperSport African Premier League Player of the Month is about more than recognising individual performances. It is about giving fans across Africa a direct voice in celebrating the players who represent the continent on one of football’s biggest stages.
