Ghanaian boxers Amadu Mohammed and Joseph Commey are one victory away from securing gold medals and a potential $20,000 prize each at the 2026 Elite IBA Africa Men and Women Boxing Championships in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Amadu, who represents Sea View Gym, will face Namibia’s Elifas Thomas Kambonde Imene in the men’s 57kg featherweight division, while Commey of Black Panthers Gym takes on Cape Verde’s Kevin Admolson in the 63.5kg light welterweight category.
Both Ghanaian fighters will be aiming to deliver impressive performances as they seek continental glory and a financial reward ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.
The two boxers bring valuable experience to their respective bouts, having won medals at the Commonwealth Games. Their experience could prove crucial as they look to overcome their opponents and secure gold for Ghana.
The Black Bombers, Ghana’s national boxing team, are being guided by coach Charles Quartey, with the team hoping to make the most of their opportunities in the competition.
Ghana entered three boxers in the championship, but Ebenezer Ankrah was eliminated at the quarter-final stage, leaving Amadu and Commey to carry the country's hopes of further success.
The championship, which is being held at the Stade des Martyrs gymnasium, runs until 1 November.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) has introduced prize money as a key feature of its continental competitions. Figures cited for the Kinshasa championship indicate that gold medallists could receive $20,000, with silver medallists earning $10,000 and bronze medallists $5,000 across the 25 men's and women's weight categories.
However, the final prize amounts had not been publicly confirmed by organisers at the time of publication.
Under the IBA's standard prize-money distribution model, 50 per cent of the award goes to the boxer, while the coach and national federation receive 25 per cent each.
A Ghanaian boxer winning bronze under that arrangement would receive $2,500, with the coach and the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) each taking $1,250.
