The Accra-Tema Motorway project has reached 53% completion, with the project company, A.T Expressway Limited, working to address construction delays and meet its August 2027 deadline.
The 19.5-kilometre road project, which began in August 2024, is slightly behind schedule, according to the company’s Chief Resident Engineer, Ing. Kwabena Bempong.
Speaking at the launch of the company’s website on Wednesday, October 28, he attributed the delays largely to difficulties in relocating utility infrastructure, including pipelines and fibre-optic cables.
He, however, assured that steps were being taken to accelerate work and ensure the project was completed within the revised timeframe.
Ing. Bempong said construction equipment and other resources had been mobilised to guarantee a consistent supply of asphalt concrete ahead of the road surfacing stage.
He explained that the initial section would comprise a 2-lane, access-controlled expressway alongside an urban highway with 3 lanes in each direction. Certain sections would expand to 5 lanes in each direction to improve merging and traffic movement between the two roads.
The project also covers improvements to the Tetteh Quarshie, Community 18 and Lashibi interchanges, alongside the construction of pedestrian crossing facilities.
According to Ing. Bempong, the planned improvements are expected to enhance movement between communities on both sides of the motorway while reducing unsafe pedestrian crossings and turning movements.
He further disclosed that the project includes 20 box culverts and 3 bridges, all at different stages of construction.
Valued at US$339 million, the project is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve urban mobility and strengthen trade connectivity along one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors.
The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ghana Highway Authority. A.T Expressway Limited is the concessionaire, while Maripoma Enterprise Limited serves as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
