Harry Kane and Alexia Putellas claimed the men’s and women’s Ballon d’Or awards following outstanding campaigns. But, beyond the two main prizes, Spain dominated the secondary awards at the ceremony at the London Palladium.
The opening award of the night saw Lamine Yamal crowned men’s young talent of the year for the third consecutive year.
Yamal laughed nervously as Thierry Henry cheekily asked: ”This is your third one, but is it the one you wanted tonight?”
The 19-year-old, who was also up for the main award, suggested the young talent gong should have gone to his Barcelona and Spain team-mate Pau Cubarsi.
Unfortunately for the teenager, that proved to be his only award of the evening.
Next, Barcelona and Spain forward Vicky Lopez won women’s young talent of the year for the second year running.
Rafa Benitez then presented compatriot Pere Romeu with the women’s coach of the year award after the Barcelona boss led the Catalan giants to a quadruple, including their third UEFA Women’s Champions League title in four years and a seventh consecutive Liga F crown.
Spain boss Luis de la Fuente claimed the men’s coach of the year award after guiding La Roja to a second World Cup triumph this summer, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final in New Jersey.
The ceremony was becoming a distinctly Spanish affair, with Barcelona and Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll named women’s goalkeeper of the year, while Unai Simon claimed the men’s equivalent following his World Cup heroics. Simon conceded just once throughout Spain’s triumphant campaign.
Bukayo Saka became the first non-Spanish winner of the night, with the Arsenal forward collecting the Socrates Award, which recognises humanitarian work and social initiatives linked to football.
Barcelona won women’s club of the year following their domestic and European success, while Paris Saint-Germain claimed the men’s award after securing a second consecutive UEFA Champions League title alongside another Ligue 1 triumph.
Last year’s Ballon d’Or winner, Ousmane Dembele, stepped up to collect the award on PSG’s behalf.
Alan Shearer presented Kane with the men’s best striker of the year award after his remarkable 73-goal haul last season, while Pachuca forward Charlyn Corral claimed the women’s prize following a campaign in which she scored 49 goals in 49 appearances.
