Construction of the proposed Bolgatanga Sports Stadium is expected to begin before the end of 2026, according to Upper East Regional Minister Akamugri Donatus Atanga.
Atanga said the government had given assurances about the project, with a team expected to visit the region this month to assess the proposed site ahead of construction.
Speaking to Citi Sports, the Regional Minister expressed optimism that the facility would boost sports development, create jobs and attract investment to the Upper East Region.
The proposed multi-purpose sports complex is expected to cater for several sporting disciplines, including football, athletics, boxing, basketball, volleyball and indoor games.
Planned facilities include a main football pitch, a training pitch, athletics tracks, a swimming pool, basketball and volleyball courts, jumping facilities and conference rooms.
The project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama's plan to expand sports infrastructure across the country. Funding has been provided in the 2026 national budget for the construction of 10 new stadia.
Atanga believes the stadium will provide young people in the region with improved opportunities to develop their sporting talents while creating employment and opening up avenues for private investment.
“Sporting activities today are no longer just about entertainment. They are also a source of employment and an opportunity for investors to come and invest,” he said.
The Regional Minister also thanked the government for including the Upper East Region among the beneficiaries of the stadium projects.
He urged residents to make effective use of the facility once completed, stressing the importance of using it to nurture talent and contribute to the region's development.
“When these facilities are provided, people should not use them for any other purpose apart from promoting their talents to become successful citizens who can help develop the region further,” he said.
With a site assessment expected this month, the next major step will be the commencement of construction.
The proposed stadium is expected to strengthen the region's sporting infrastructure, improve access to training facilities and create a platform for emerging athletes to pursue careers in sport.
