Nigerian police have rescued 11 Ghanaians who were allegedly held hostage in Sagamu, Ogun State, after reportedly paying GH¢40,000 each to a fellow Ghanaian who promised to facilitate their travel to Canada and Spain.
The victims, comprising seven males and four females, were rescued by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following intelligence received on October 19, 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said officers swiftly acted on the information and located the hideout where the victims were being held.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the victims were allegedly lured to Nigeria by a fellow Ghanaian who claimed he could arrange visas for them to travel abroad.
Each of the victims reportedly paid GH¢40,000 before travelling to Nigeria, where they were allegedly detained against their will.
The police said the rescued Ghanaians were receiving appropriate care and support as investigations continued to identify and arrest other persons suspected of involvement in the alleged network.
The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for its prompt response and professionalism in rescuing the victims.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, combating transnational crime and preventing Ogun State from becoming a haven for criminals who exploit unsuspecting people.
The command urged members of the public to verify overseas travel and visa-processing arrangements before making payments and to report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
It also pledged to continue intelligence-led operations and collaborate with other agencies to dismantle criminal networks and bring suspected perpetrators to justice.
