Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has reiterated his desire to become head coach of Ghana’s Black Stars, expressing confidence in the talent available within the national team.

The Trinidad and Tobago football legend had previously indicated his interest in the position and says Ghana’s footballing history and quality of players make the job an attractive prospect.

“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” Yorke told The Guardian.

“You look at the squad and your eyes open even wider.

“The conversation started there and then reached the media before I really knew it.

“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow,” he added.

The Black Stars are currently without a substantive head coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz after Ghana’s disappointing start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

Ghana suffered consecutive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their opening two Group C matches, leaving the four-time African champions at the bottom of the standings without a point.

The results have increased pressure on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports to appoint a new head coach capable of rebuilding the team and restoring confidence ahead of their upcoming international assignments.

In the meantime, the GFA and the Sports Ministry have announced an interim technical team to oversee the Black Stars’ next matches.

The team will be led by Kim Lars Björkegren, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram serving as assistant coaches. Former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda has been appointed goalkeeper trainer.

The interim technical team will take charge of Ghana’s Matchday Three and Four fixtures against Somalia in November as the Black Stars seek to revive their qualifying campaign.

Ghana’s poor start has left them with little room for further setbacks, making the two matches crucial to their hopes of remaining in contention for qualification to the 2027 AFCON.

The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to appoint a substantive head coach in November, with Yorke among the names to have publicly expressed an interest in taking charge of the national team.

The former Manchester United forward, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career at club level and represented Trinidad and Tobago internationally, believes establishing the right team culture and securing the players’ commitment would be key to unlocking Ghana’s considerable footballing potential.
