The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is set to commence a nationwide meter audit exercise across all its operational areas to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.
The exercise will cover prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring to verify metering systems and ensure accurate measurement and billing of electricity consumption.
The power distribution company has announced that it will not issue separate appointment letters or advance notifications before its authorised personnel visit customers’ premises.
In a public announcement on Tuesday, October 20, ECG urged customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel not to deny or delay access to authorised staff solely because they had not received an individual notification.
“This announcement serves as official notice of the exercise. No further prior notices, appointment letters, or advance notifications will be issued,” the company stated.
ECG said customers are required to grant its employees or authorised agents safe and reasonable access to their premises, subject to the production of verifiable identification, in line with Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413).
The company, however, advised customers to verify the identity of field personnel before allowing them onto their premises.
“All ECG employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise will carry official ECG identification cards,” the announcement added.
Customers can verify the identity of personnel by calling ECG’s customer call centre on 0302 611 611 or using the *226# USSD code available on all mobile networks.
To use the USSD verification service, customers must dial *226#, select Option 5, labelled “Verify Staff”, and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the staff member.
The staff member’s full name, region and district will then be displayed for confirmation, according to ECG.
