Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has urged his players to improve their finishing as Ghana prepare to face Mauritius in the second leg of their second-round qualifying tie for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Ghana take a commanding 3-0 lead into Tuesday’s return fixture after winning the first leg at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex in Mauritius last Thursday.
A win or draw at the Essipong Stadium in Sekondi-Takoradi will secure the Black Queens’ place in the third round, but Björkegren has warned his side against complacency.
“We need to make sure we start the game in the best way possible. We need to be serious, be professional, and make sure to kill the game as soon as possible,” he told GFA Media.
Despite the convincing first-leg victory, the Swedish coach was concerned by the number of scoring opportunities Ghana failed to convert, saying his players must become more clinical in front of goal.
“The negative thing is that we miss too many chances. Sometimes we are a little bit unlucky, but when it happens game after game, when you hit the post, and the ball goes out instead of going in, then sometimes it is also a question of quality,” he said.
Björkegren believes Ghana could have scored more than three goals in Mauritius and expects an improved attacking display in the return fixture.
“I would say that on a normal day, we score three or four goals at least. Hopefully, it is going to be better tomorrow,” he added.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 15:00 GMT, with Ghana looking to complete the job and move a step closer to their first appearance at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.
The Black Queens have yet to qualify for the Olympic Games since women’s football was introduced at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Should Ghana advance, they will face either Zambia or Uganda in the third round of the qualifying competition as their pursuit of a historic place at Los Angeles 2028 continues.
