The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has begun implementing its Inter-Institutional Communication Strategy and Information and Communication Policy for 2026–2031 to strengthen coordination and harmonise communication among its institutions.
The initiative is being advanced through a workshop in Accra, Ghana, which began on Monday, October 12, in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).
The workshop brings together communication officers from ECOWAS institutions and specialised agencies to translate the new framework into practical actions that support regional integration and the bloc’s Vision 2050.
Speaking at the workshop, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Ghana, Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Gana, called for measurable results and coordinated action rather than an emphasis on the number of meetings held.
“Our measure of success should not be the number of meetings we hold, but the concrete improvements we achieve,” he said.
He said effective implementation of the framework could transform the working group from a discussion platform into a mechanism for coordinated regional action.
The strategy and policy seek to strengthen cooperation among ECOWAS institutions, improve public engagement and support the bloc’s transition from an ECOWAS of States to an ECOWAS of Peoples.
