Ghana’s Black Meteors will resume preparations on Monday, October 12, as head coach Desmond Ofei steps up efforts to secure qualification for the 2027 CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations.
The team will regroup at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, with 32 players expected to report to camp ahead of their two-legged qualifying tie against Libya next month.
The matches are scheduled to take place during the November 9–17 international window, with Ghana aiming to progress to the final round of the qualification campaign.
The squad will be reduced as preparations progress, while six foreign-based players are expected to join the team ahead of the qualifiers.
Ofei and his technical staff intend to keep the locally based players in camp until the matches. However, temporary releases could be granted weekly to allow players to feature for their respective clubs in the Ghana Premier League.
Ghana will travel to Libya for the first leg before hosting the North African side in the return fixture. The Black Meteors must win the tie on aggregate to advance to the final qualifying round, where they would face either Equatorial Guinea or Niger.
The three-round qualifying campaign will determine the seven countries that join hosts Egypt at the eight-team U-23 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
For Ghana, qualification would be an important step towards returning to the men’s Olympic football tournament, last at the Games in Athens in 2004.
The Black Meteors will therefore be hoping to navigate the qualifiers successfully and end the country’s 23-year absence from Olympic men’s football when the Los Angeles 2028 Games arrive.
