Aduana FC general manager Takyi Arhin says the GH¢1m given to each Ghana Premier League club ahead of the 2026-27 season was a loan secured by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), rather than direct government funding.
His comments come after Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams said the government was financing the new Ghana Premier League season.
Adams said the support was intended to help clubs become more financially sustainable and eventually reduce their reliance on government funding.
However, Takyi said the money provided to the 18 Premier League clubs was borrowed by the GFA with government assistance and would have to be repaid by the association.
"The GH¢1 million given to each Ghana Premier League club was not given to us by the government. It was a loan secured by the GFA and facilitated by the government," he told Sporty FM.
"The GFA is going to pay it back."
The GFA announced the GH¢1m package as part of a financial support initiative for all 18 Premier League clubs before the start of the 2026-27 campaign.
The funding was intended to help clubs meet their operational costs as the league began its new season.
The differing descriptions of the funding have raised questions over the exact nature of the government's financial support for the competition.
