The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have agreed to establish a five-member Technical Search Committee to identify and recommend a new head coach for the Black Stars.

The committee is expected to submit its report by Friday, 9 October 2026, following a meeting between the ministry and the GFA on Friday to discuss the management and performance of Ghana's national teams.

The meeting was held after Carlos Queiroz resigned as Black Stars coach following Ghana's poor start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the ministry said the discussions focused on strengthening the management of the national teams, coaching structures and Ghana's football development pathway.

"The Ministry of Sports and Recreation acknowledges the concerns expressed by Ghanaians regarding the declining performances of our national football teams," the statement said.

"The Ministry appreciates the public's enduring support for Ghanaian football and recognises the expectation for decisive action, improved performance and greater accountability."

  • Seven measures agreed

The ministry and the GFA agreed on seven measures, with the appointment of a new Black Stars coach among the key priorities.

The five-member Technical Search Committee will scout for and recommend a new head coach, with its report due by 9 October.

The two parties also agreed to appoint a technical head to oversee the development pathway for Ghana's Under-15, Under-17 and Under-20 teams.

Each of the three youth teams will have a dedicated technical team, alongside appropriate competition structures designed to improve player progression.

As part of the restructuring of the youth development system, Under-18 and Under-19 competitions will be suspended after the completion of ongoing competitions at those levels.

The ministry and GFA also agreed that the Black Stars head coach should reside in Ghana and regularly monitor the domestic league.

They said monitoring and scouting of players in domestic competitions would also be strengthened to widen the pool of players available for selection to the senior national team.

  • Changes to football development

The GFA Technical Directorate will work with the National Schools and Grassroots Sports programme and football academies to improve league development and create clearer pathways for young players.

A Public Interest Committee will also be established by the GFA in collaboration with the ministry to oversee and coordinate the implementation of the agreed reforms.

The meeting also considered relocating the country's technical hub to the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence at Prampram.

The ministry and GFA further proposed reducing the membership of each national team's management committee from five members to three, although further discussions will be held on the structure.

The two parties will also work towards signing a FIFA-standard cooperation agreement to define their respective responsibilities and provide a framework for implementing the reforms.

The measures come as Ghana seeks to address concerns over the performance of its national teams and strengthen the structures underpinning the country's football development.
