Former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah says he is disappointed by his suspension but insists he remains calm as investigations continue into allegations surrounding a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
President John Dramani Mahama suspended Mr Ampofo Ankrah on Thursday, 1 October, following allegations concerning the handling of visa and travel arrangements for prospective World Cup travellers.
The controversy centres on claims that about US$623,000 was received from individuals seeking assistance with visa applications and travel arrangements ahead of the tournament.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah, however, says he has not been given an adequate opportunity to explain his side of the matter.
Speaking to JoySports after his suspension, he said he was disappointed by the development but had no intention of responding angrily.
“I’m still calm, a bit disappointed,” he said.
“I’m not one to rant and rage. I’m disappointed that I’ve not been heard. It is disappointing that we haven’t been able to have a discussion as to exactly what the situation is.”
Mr Ampofo Ankrah said his attention before his suspension had been focused largely on preparing the Accra Sports Stadium and other facilities under the NSA for upcoming national assignments.
He said preparations were particularly important with the Black Stars and other national teams expected to use the facilities.
“I’ve been focused on preparing the facility, Accra Sports Stadium, and other areas around the National Sports Authority to get ready for the Black Stars and other national assignments,” he added.
His suspension comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over the management of arrangements surrounding Ghana's participation in the 2026 World Cup.
The allegations have prompted calls for investigations into how payments from prospective travellers were handled and the role of officials involved in the process.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah's suspension means he will step aside while the matter is examined.
Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong has subsequently been appointed Acting Director-General of the National Sports Authority.
Prof Sarpong is an Associate Professor of Physical Education and Sports at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).
Mr Ampofo Ankrah has maintained that he would have preferred an opportunity to explain the circumstances surrounding the allegations before his removal from office.
