Government could consider dissolving GFA after Black Stars' poor AFCON start - Ernest Henry Norgbey

The Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, Ernest Henry Norgbey, says the government could consider dissolving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and rebuilding the organisation if the situation in the country’s football does not improve.

Norgbey made the comments after the Black Stars suffered a 4-2 defeat by The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, leaving Ghana without a point from their opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Ghana had taken a 2-0 lead against The Gambia but conceded four goals to suffer a second successive defeat in Group C, having lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast in their opening match last Thursday.

Speaking to Akoma FM, Norgbey referred to developments in Nigeria while calling for greater investment in Ghanaian sport.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the government steps in and says, ‘We are dissolving the GFA and starting afresh,’ because we have seen something similar happen in Nigeria. We need to invest more in our sporting activities,” he said.

However, Norgbey stressed that he was not advocating for the immediate dissolution of the GFA, saying Parliament’s Sports Committee first needed to establish what was happening within the Black Stars camp.

“If we are banned for two years, those two years could be used to rebuild and restructure the system, but it is not a call I will make at this moment until I get an understanding of what exactly is happening in camp,” he added.

The defeat leaves Ghana bottom of Group C with no points from two matches, putting their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFCON in a difficult position.

The Black Stars will return to qualifying action in October when they face Somalia in a double-header at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana are attempting to return to the continental tournament after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, bringing an end to their run of more than two decades of consecutive appearances at the competition.
