Samuel George calls for Black Stars and GFA to be disbanded after disappointing loss Gambia defeat

Ghana's Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has called for the Black Stars to be disbanded and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) dissolved following the team's defeat by The Gambia.

Ghana suffered a second consecutive defeat in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after surrendering a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan put the Black Stars 2-0 ahead, but The Gambia fought back to complete a remarkable comeback and claim all three points.

The result came four days after Ghana opened their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in Bouaké.

Reacting to questions on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mr George, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, called for a complete overhaul of Ghanaian football.

He said the Black Stars should be disbanded, the GFA dissolved and Ghana should accept a potential two-year FIFA ban to allow the country's football structures to be rebuilt.

"As for the Black Stars, my position before is my position today. Disband the team. Sack the FA. Let FIFA ban us for 2 years. Take the time to properly rebuild the team. Truth hurts, but the patchwork is worse. Cheers," he wrote.

The back-to-back defeats have left Ghana with a difficult task in their bid to qualify for the 2027 AFCON, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The Black Stars will return to qualifying action in October with a double-header against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana missed the 2025 AFCON in Morocco after failing to qualify for the tournament, ending their run of appearances at the continental championship.
