Resigning would not solve Ghana football problems - Carlos Queiroz

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz says his resignation would not change the wider situation in Ghana football after the team suffered a second successive defeat in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

The Black Stars had started their Group C campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké last Thursday and are now without a point from their opening two matches.

Asked whether he would consider resigning after the latest defeat, Queiroz said stepping down would be the easiest option but questioned whether it would address the problems facing Ghana football.

“When results like this [happen], the option to resign is the easiest solution,” the Portuguese coach said after the match.

“If you believe that if the coach resigns, you can change the situation of football in Ghana, I will be the first one to resign.

“I don’t have that belief, but that is the decision for the board of the federation [GFA] to analyse and decide.”

Ghana had looked on course for a first victory under Queiroz after taking a 2-0 lead against The Gambia, but the visitors fought back to claim all three points.

The defeat leaves the four-time African champions facing a difficult task to revive their qualification campaign and secure a place at the 2027 tournament.

The Black Stars will return to action in October with a double-header against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana are attempting to return to the continental showpiece after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
