2026/27 GPL: Asante Kotoko part ways with coach Eric Tinkler after three months

South African coach Eric Tinkler has left his position as Asante Kotoko head coach just three months after taking charge of the Ghana Premier League club.

The 54-year-old was appointed in July ahead of the 2026/27 season with the mandate of restoring the Porcupine Warriors to domestic and continental prominence following an eighth-place league finish last term.

However, his tenure has come to an early end after only four league matches.

Kotoko have recorded one win, two draws and one defeat so far this season, with Sunday's 2-0 loss to Aduana FC proving to be Tinkler's final game in charge. The result dropped the club to ninth place in the league standings and handed the former Orlando Pirates and Cape Town City coach his first defeat since arriving in Kumasi.

In a statement, Kotoko confirmed that Tinkler had requested to be released from his contract for personal reasons.

"The Board of Directors of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club has agreed to the request of its Head Coach, Mr Eric Tinkler, to be released from his contract with the Club effective immediately for personal reasons," the club said.

The club added that discussions were held in an attempt to persuade the coach to remain but both parties ultimately agreed to end the relationship.

Kotoko thanked Tinkler for his professionalism and commitment during his brief spell and wished him success in his future endeavours.

The club also stressed that its sporting objectives remain unchanged, with the technical team set to continue under the supervision of Director of Football Stanley Menzo.

Despite his short stay, Tinkler guided Kotoko to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup, defeating rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Kotoko will now turn their attention to Thursday's Matchday Five fixture against Karela United at the Baba Yara Stadium as they begin the search for a new head coach.
