FRI, 18 SEP 2026

Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to return to Ghana on Friday, 18 September, as preparations begin for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams disclosed the development when he appeared before Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth and Sports to brief lawmakers on Ghana’s participation in the 2026 Fifa World Cup and the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Queiroz is returning after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation agreed to retain the Portuguese coach.

Some members of his technical team are already in Ghana preparing for the upcoming qualifiers.

The 73-year-old is expected to meet Minister Kofi Adams before his official unveiling, with details of his contract extension expected to be finalised following his return.

Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup in North America and will now turn his attention to securing qualification for the 2027 Afcon.

Ghana begin their qualifying campaign away to Ivory Coast at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

The qualifiers will be Ghana’s first attempt to return to the continental tournament after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Afcon in Morocco.

Ghana had appeared at every Afcon tournament between 2008 and 2023 before missing out on the 2025 edition.
