Accra Sports Stadium undergoing upgrades to meet CAF standards ahead of AFCON qualifiers – NSA DG Yaw Ampofo Ankrah

The National Sports Authority (NSA) says ongoing work at the Accra Sports Stadium is focused on maintaining the venue's standards as it prepares to host a series of international fixtures.

The stadium is currently Ghana's only venue approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for FIFA Category A matches, with Niger and Somalia set to use it as their home ground for upcoming international games.

The Black Stars will also return to the stadium for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, hosting Gambia in Accra three days after facing Ivory Coast in Bouaké.

Speaking to 3Sports, NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah said preserving the stadium's CAF-approved status remained a top priority.

"Accra Sports Stadium is currently the only approved venue for FIFA Category A matches. The qualifiers are one. We finished the World Cup qualifiers last year successfully," he said.

Ampofo Ankrah acknowledged that while the stadium has met CAF's requirements, further improvements are still needed.

He said the ongoing works are intended both to maintain the facility's current standards and to ensure it is ready for the demanding schedule of international matches ahead.

"There's a lot of work that still needs to be done, not just here at the Accra Sports Stadium but across the regions. Here, major works will be done, and that is the focus for the future," he said.

"Currently, additional works that need to be done to keep the stadium at its standard and also upgrade it for these upcoming games are ongoing."

With the 2027 AFCON qualifiers beginning later this month, the NSA says preparations are continuing to ensure the Accra Sports Stadium is ready to host Ghana and other international fixtures.
