Challenging Heights reveals how Ghanaian girls are recruited into sex trade through TikTok

Challenging Heights, a Ghanaian child protection organisation, has raised concerns about an emerging network using social media platforms, especially TikTok, to recruit Ghanaian children into commercial sexual exploitation.

According to the organisation, girls living in mining communities are increasingly being targeted, with some victims reportedly below 16 years being drawn into the sex trade.

The warning comes after a joint operation by Challenging Heights and the Ghana Police Service resulted in the rescue of 47 victims of sexual exploitation from six communities near Goaso in the Ahafo Region.

Of the rescued victims, 26 were placed under the care of Challenging Heights for rehabilitation and recovery. Sixteen of those handed over to the organisation were identified as minors.

Although a significant number of the victims were foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians, the organisation says Ghanaian girls are now becoming increasingly vulnerable to recruitment into prostitution in mining areas.

James Kofi Annan, founder of Challenging Heights, told Citi News that the situation reflects a growing pattern of child exploitation in mining communities.

“We are now seeing an active recruitment of Ghanaians, Ghanaian girls, into the sex trade in the mining communities..”

“We are also seeing a worrying trend of babies being affected by this sexual exploitation and forced prostitution in the mining [communities],” he added.

Mr Annan urged the Ghana Police Service to step up investigations and operations against human trafficking and sexual exploitation, particularly in areas identified as hotspots.

He further appealed to the Ghana Immigration Service to tighten border surveillance and controls to prevent traffickers from transporting victims across Ghana’s borders.
