Asamoah Gyan welcomes Mahama's renewed push to revive Colts football

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has welcomed President John Dramani Mahama's renewed commitment to reviving Colts football, describing the juvenile league system as vital to developing the country's next generation of players.

Speaking at the launch of the 2026/27 Colts Football League at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Ghana's National Team and Colts Football Ambassador said he was encouraged after hearing the president publicly highlight the need to restore juvenile football.

"Last week, I was watching television, and I saw him talking about Juvenile Colts Football. I was very, very impressed. I was very, very happy," Gyan said.

The former Black Stars striker revealed that discussions about relaunching the Colts League had already taken place with Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku, making Mahama's remarks particularly timely.

"Should I say it was even a coincidence? Because the president of the Ghana Football Association and I have already discussed launching the Colts Soccer League, and lo and behold, the President of Ghana himself also raised an eyebrow about Colts Football," he added.

Gyan said the renewed attention from both the government and the GFA underlined the importance of rebuilding the country's grassroots football structure.

"So, this could tell you how important Juvenile Football, the Colts Football, is to us Ghanaians."

The relaunch of the Colts Football League comes amid renewed efforts to strengthen youth football pathways in Ghana, with the competition expected to provide more opportunities for young players to progress into the organised football system.
