Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has cast doubt over Mohammed Kudus' readiness for Ghana's upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, revealing that the midfielder is still working his way back to full fitness after a lengthy injury lay-off.
Kudus made his return to action late last month, coming off the bench against Newcastle United for his first appearance since suffering an injury in January 2026. The Ghana international has since featured as a substitute in matches against Nottingham Forest and Everton.
Despite his gradual return, De Zerbi believes the 25-year-old is not yet at his optimum physical level.
Speaking ahead of Tottenham's Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool, the Italian coach named Kudus among several players still regaining full fitness.
"Mat Fernandez, Connor Gallagher and Kudus are not in the best condition yet," De Zerbi said.
The Spurs manager also highlighted Kudus' versatility, suggesting the former Ajax and West Ham United midfielder could be deployed in a more advanced role.
"Kudus can play number 10, more offensive. The idea is to use the characteristics of the players in the first eleven," he added.
Kudus has not featured for Ghana since sustaining the injury that ruled him out of the Black Stars' 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. His absence was a major setback for Ghana, who exited the tournament in the Round of 32.
The midfielder is expected to be considered for Ghana's AFCON 2027 qualifying matches against Côte d'Ivoire and The Gambia later this month. However, his chances of making Carlos Queiroz's squad could depend on whether he can prove his fitness in the coming weeks.
