Football News Championship: Chris Wilder praises Jordan Ayews debut despite Sheffield United defeat
MON, 14 SEP 2026

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder says Jordan Ayew showed exactly why the club signed him after the Ghana captain made an encouraging debut in the Blades' 1-0 Championship defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 35-year-old, who joined United as a free agent following his departure from Leicester City, came off the bench in the 64th minute to make his first appearance for the club.

Despite the defeat, Wilder was impressed by the experience and composure the forward brought during his 26-minute cameo.

“We got for me a really experienced player, and he showed his experience, he showed his quality, he showed his attitude, and Jordan will be better for those good contributions,” Wilder said.

Ayew completed three of his five passes, registered a shot, made two defensive contributions and won three of his nine ground duels in a lively introduction.

The Black Stars captain is expected to play an important role as Sheffield United push for promotion this season.

His move to Bramall Lane marks another chapter in a lengthy English career that has included spells at Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

Ayew could make his first start when Sheffield United face Fleetwood Town in the third round of the Carabao Cup before the Blades return to league action away to Stoke City at the Bet365 Stadium.
