The organisers of the fourth Tampico Accra Inter-City Marathon are aiming to attract at least 2,000 participants when the event returns on 10 October.
Race Director William Ezah said the organisers were expecting elite athletes, amateur runners, keep-fit clubs, churches, schools, families and fitness enthusiasts to take part in the annual event, which will be celebrated as "Tampico Day".
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Ezah said preparations were complete, with running vests fitted with timing chips, medals and certificates already in place ahead of race day.
He added that this year's edition would be more inclusive, with athletes living with disabilities and skaters joining the elite runners on the streets of Accra. He also revealed that the winner's prize for the main race has been doubled compared with last year's competition.
"We want October 10 to be a memorable day that promotes healthy living," Ezah said, adding that participants would also enjoy free Tampico drinks and hot noodles as part of the festivities.
The marathon will feature two race categories – 5km and 21km – with both starting and finishing at the Trust Sports Emporium, also known as the Bukom Boxing Arena.
The winner of the 21km race will earn the opportunity to represent Ghana at an international marathon.
Registration costs GH¢100 for both categories, with interested participants able to sign up by dialling *320*21#.
The event is supported by the National Sports Authority, Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Online Sports Journalists, Ghana Athletics, MYST Water, MAPHLIX, GWO SEVO, SOCCA BOX, Ethiopian Airlines, Capelli Sport and Zimansky Hotel.
