Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo could be used as a centre-forward this season as the club looks to ease the workload on Erling Haaland.
City travel to Portugal to face FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, with questions lingering over the club's decision not to sign a specialist backup striker during the summer transfer window.
Maresca believes Semenyo offers a viable alternative through the middle and hinted that the 26-year-old could be deployed as a number nine depending on the opposition and tactical approach.
"At the moment, he's played every minute apart from the Community Shield," Maresca said.
"We need to protect Erling because the season is very long and he's going to have games where he needs to recover.
"It depends on the game and the game plan. Antoine can play nine."
Semenyo has made a bright start to the 2026-27 campaign, contributing two assists in City's opening three matches.
The Ghana international is expected to feature against Porto as City begin another European campaign, with his versatility giving Maresca another attacking option alongside Haaland.
