CAF Champions League prelims: TP Mazembe unfazed by Medeama's home advantage

TP Mazembe say they are ready for the challenge of facing Ghanaian champions Medeama SC in the CAF Champions League, insisting they will not be intimidated by the home atmosphere in Tarkwa.

The Congolese giants will be hosted at the TNA Stadium for Sunday's preliminary-round first leg, with both sides seeking an early advantage before next week's return fixture in Lubumbashi.

Mazembe's Communications Chief, Jantis Mutombo, said the team's lengthy journey from Accra to Tarkwa had done little to disrupt preparations, with the players quickly settling into their surroundings.

"We had a long journey from Accra, but the boys looked ready when we arrived in Tarkwa," Mutombo told Sporty FM.

"Our focus has been on this game because it sets the tone for qualification to the next stage."

Although Mazembe have previously faced Medeama, Mutombo believes the Ghana Premier League champions present a fresh test following changes to their squad.

"We have played Medeama earlier, but this is a different side, and they have made changes," he said.

"TP Mazembe understands the African level, and we are here to compete."

Medeama are expected to enjoy strong backing from home supporters, but Mutombo said Mazembe's experience across the continent means they are focused solely on events on the pitch.

"Our focus is on the playing body and their coaches, and not the fans," he said.

"We have played in difficult venues like Esperance, Zamalek and Al Ahly, so we know the game is on the pitch, and that's where our preparations have been centred."

Five-time African champions Mazembe will rely on their continental pedigree as they look to take a positive result back to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Medeama, meanwhile, will hope to build on their recent success after lifting the 2026/27 Champion of Champions title against Nations FC and make home advantage count in the opening leg of their continental campaign.
