Ghana placed in top pot for U23 AFCON 2027 qualifying draw

Ghana have been placed in the highest-ranked pot for the second round of the qualifiers for the 2027 CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations, alongside some of the continent's leading football nations.

The 14 teams exempted from the first round have been divided into two pots based on their rankings ahead of the second-round draw.

Ghana are in Pot 5, which contains the seven highest-ranked exempted teams. The Black Meteors are joined in the pot by Morocco, Mali, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Guinea.

The other seven exempted teams - Niger, Algeria, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Zambia and Senegal - have been placed in Pot 4.

Under the draw procedure, a team from Pot 4 will be paired with one of the teams that emerge from the first round of qualifying.

A team from Pot 5 will then be drawn against another first-round winner.

The winners of those two ties will subsequently meet in the third round, with the process repeated until all 14 teams involved in the second round have been determined.

The format means the exempted sides will enter the qualifying campaign at the second-round stage, but they will still have to navigate a potentially difficult route to reach the tournament.

For Ghana, the draw represents the first major step towards securing a place at the 2027 U23 AFCON, which will be hosted by Egypt.

The tournament will also serve as the qualification competition for the men's football event at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Ghana will therefore be seeking to make the most of their position in Pot 5 when the draw is conducted, although their eventual opponents will depend on the outcome of the opening round.

The Black Meteors have a strong history in the U23 AFCON, having won the inaugural edition in 2011. Ghana have also reached the tournament's latter stages on several occasions, making the qualification campaign an important one for the country's next generation of players.

With 14 teams exempted from the first round and the remaining nations required to battle through the opening stage, the second-round draw will begin to establish the route each contender must take to reach the finals in Egypt.

The qualifiers will ultimately determine the teams that join hosts Egypt at the 2027 U23 AFCON, with the tournament expected to play a key role in deciding Africa's representatives at the 2028 Olympics.
