Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president Mark Addo says the decision to give each Ghana Premier League club GH¢1 million ahead of the 2026/27 season marks a major shift in the financing of domestic football.
The GFA announced the financial and incentive package at its 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Thursday.
The GH¢1 million base payment is intended to help top-flight clubs meet operational costs and improve their financial stability ahead of the new campaign.
Mr Addo described the upfront payment as unprecedented in the history of the competition.
“For the first time, each club is receiving like a million cedis before the league starts. That's unheard of,” he told the media after Congress.
He said the payment was part of a wider strategy by the GFA to strengthen the Premier League and increase the financial benefits for participating clubs.
The funds are expected to assist clubs with preparations for the new season, including squad building, logistics and other operational expenses.
Mr Addo also said the association was continuing efforts to increase the commercial value of the league through broadcasting, sponsorship and other revenue-generating opportunities.
“The marketing department and the FA continue to work all the time, and as more sponsors come in, we will definitely make sure,” he said.
He added that the Premier League remained the GFA's most important domestic football product and needed commercial partners that could contribute to its growth.
“GPL is our best product, so we have to also make sure that we have the right fit in terms of the right sponsor,” Mr Addo said.
The GH¢1 million payment forms part of a GH¢9.5 million prize and incentive package announced for the 2026/27 season.
The league champions will receive GH¢3 million and a JAC vehicle, while the runners-up will earn GH¢1 million.
The third- and fourth-placed clubs will receive GH¢800,000 and GH¢750,000 respectively.
The 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to begin on 5 September.
