Mohamed Salah joins Turkish side Trabzonspor as free agent after Liverpool exit

Mohamed Salah has joined Super Lig club Trabzonspor as a free agent, signing a two-year deal, after ending an illustrious spell with Liverpool following the expiry of his contract, the Turkish club announced on Thursday.

Salah, 34, scored 257 goals at Anfield and won two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League to establish himself as one of the Merseyside club's all-time greats.

Trabzonspor said in a statement: "A two-year agreement has been reached with professional footballer Mohamed Salah."

The announcement was followed by pictures of Salah, dressed in a Trabzonspor kit, signing his contract alongside the club's president, Ertugrul Dogan.

On Wednesday, Salah arrived in Trabzon and was welcomed by thousands of fans at the airport.

While fireworks and flares were let off, the Egyptian led the supporters in a chant as his first act as a Trabzonspor player.

Before he had even arrived, Trabzonspor's official social media accounts had posted a link to a live tracker following his flight as he prepared to touch down to seal his move.

In his first photos in the Trabzonspor kit, Salah wore the No. 61 on the back rather than the usual No. 11 shirt he wore for years at Liverpool, or the No. 10 jersey he regularly dons for Egypt.

The choice was no coincidence. Trabzon's area code, written on vehicle number plates in Turkey, is 61, and it has become a symbol of the city in north-eastern Turkey.

Salah had been linked to Trabzonspor's Turkish rivals Besiktas earlier this transfer window, as well as a potential move to MLS or Saudi Arabia.

Trabzonspor are managed by former Turkey international Fatih Tekke, and the team boasts a number of international players.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana recently rejoined on loan from Manchester United for the second season in a row, while Stefan Savic, Paul Onuachu and John Lundstram have all had stints in the Premier League.

Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish top-flight last season, qualifying for the UEFA Europa League as a result, and also won the Turkish Cup.

During the summer, Salah captained Egypt to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by eventual runners-up Argentina.
