Team Ghana returns home after disappointing Commonwealth Games campaign

Team Ghana has begun returning home in batches following a disappointing campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, where the country finished 30th on the final medals table.

The first group of athletes and officials arrived in Ghana this week, including boxing bronze medallist Amadu Mohammed, one of only two Ghanaian athletes to reach the podium at the Games.

Para athlete Zinabu Issah produced Ghana's standout performance by claiming a silver medal in the women's shot put, while Mohammed secured bronze in boxing. Their achievements accounted for Ghana's entire medal haul in Glasgow.

Ghana sent a delegation of 40 athletes to compete across athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, swimming, weightlifting and para sports. However, the number of officials who travelled with the team was not publicly disclosed. In boxing alone, the contingent included four coaches as well as Ghana Boxing Federation (GBA) president Dauda Fuseni.

The overall performance fell below expectations, particularly in boxing, a discipline that has traditionally delivered medals for Ghana at major multi-sport events.

At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Ghana won three boxing medals, including a silver and two bronze medals. Four years earlier in Gold Coast, boxing produced Ghana's only medal with a bronze.

This year's campaign, however, proved far more difficult. Head boxing coach Dr Ofori Asare admitted during the competition that inadequate preparations had affected the team's chances, insisting he was "not a magician" capable of producing medals despite challenges ranging from insufficient training to delays in receiving competition equipment.

GBA president Dauda Fuseni had refrained from making bold medal predictions before the Games but expressed hope that the team would improve on previous performances. Similarly, Commonwealth Games Association Ghana president Richard Akpokavie had been optimistic about the country's prospects following preparations, although the final outcome is likely to disappoint both officials and supporters.

India dominated the boxing competition, finishing with 10 medals comprising seven gold and three silver. England placed second with four gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

Among African nations, Namibia impressed with one silver and two bronze medals in boxing, while Lesotho and Zambia each claimed two bronze medals. Ghana finished with a single bronze in the sport.

Across all sports, Nigeria emerged as Africa's highest-ranked nation with 24 medals, made up of 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze. South Africa collected 28 medals, including seven gold, while Kenya finished with 12 medals comprising three gold, four silver and five bronze.

Australia topped the overall medals table with an impressive 171 medals, including 70 gold. England finished second with 110 medals, Canada placed third with 62, while India occupied fourth place with 39 medals.

Despite the disappointing overall campaign, several Ghanaian athletes produced encouraging individual performances. Swimmer Abeiku Jackson broke the national record in the men's 50m butterfly, while para athlete Hayford Addai reached the final of the men's 100m and finished fifth on his Commonwealth Games debut.

Team captain Joseph Paul Amoah also reached the men's 200m final, finishing seventh, while Ghana's men's 4x100m relay team narrowly missed out on a bronze medal after placing fourth.

The Games have prompted renewed debate over Ghana's preparation for major international competitions. Critics have questioned whether enough attention was devoted to athletes' training and logistical support, arguing that resources appeared to be focused on side projects such as the Ghana House initiative and entertainment activities rather than performance on the field of play.

With attention now turning to future international events, Ghana's sporting authorities are expected to assess the campaign and identify lessons aimed at improving the country's competitiveness on the global stage.
