Gor Mahia head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has revealed that he personally recommended the signing of Ghanaian defender Ebenezer Ocran, citing the centre-back’s wealth of experience as a major factor behind the move.

The Kenyan champions recently reached an agreement with Ghana Premier League side FC Samartex for the transfer of Ocran, as they continue preparations for their CAF Champions League campaign next season.

Akonnor believes the 29-year-old will be an important addition to the squad, particularly as Gor Mahia looks to compete at the continental level after securing the Kenyan Premier League title last season.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, the former Black Stars coach explained that the club identified the need for an experienced player in defence and saw Ocran as the right fit.

"We needed an experienced player in that position," Akonnor said when asked why the club opted to sign the 29-year-old centre-back.

Ocran has established himself as one of FC Samartex’s most reliable performers in recent seasons. The defender played a key role in the club’s impressive campaign last season, helping them finish fifth in the Ghana Premier League while earning praise for his consistency, leadership and defensive organisation.

With Gor Mahia set to represent Kenya in the CAF Champions League, Akonnor is confident that Ocran’s experience and calmness at the back will strengthen the team’s ambitions on the African stage.

The move also marks another step in Ocran’s career as he takes on a new challenge outside Ghana following his influential spell with FC Samartex.
