Ghana’s Black Satellites will launch their campaign for regional glory on Monday, July 27, 2026, when they face defending champions Nigeria in a crucial Group B opening match at the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The highly anticipated fixture at the Lycée Scientifique Stadium, scheduled for 14:00 GMT (2pm local time), brings together two of West Africa’s biggest youth football nations in one of the tournament’s standout encounters.

The match offers Ghana an opportunity to make an early statement and overcome the disappointment of the previous edition, where the Black Satellites lost 2-1 to Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in the final in Lomé, Togo.

Head coach Maxwell Konadu and his team have used that defeat as motivation, with the squad determined to reclaim the regional title. Ghana arrived in Côte d’Ivoire last Friday and has completed an intensive build-up, including two training sessions in Yamoussoukro.

Konadu is confident his players are ready for the challenge, despite being aware of Nigeria’s physical style and aggressive approach. The Ghana coach believes his team has the quality, discipline and tactical awareness needed to compete against their long-time rivals.

A victory over Nigeria would give Ghana a strong start in a difficult Group B, which also includes Burkina Faso and Togo. A positive result would boost the team’s confidence and improve their chances of reaching the knockout stage while pushing for the championship trophy.

Although the tournament serves as the qualifying competition for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana’s place at the continental tournament is already secured as hosts.

However, the WAFU B Championship remains an important test for Konadu’s side, providing an opportunity to build team chemistry, assess emerging talents and prepare for next year’s continental competition on home soil.
