English Championship club Swansea City have completed the signing of Ghanaian winger Joseph Opoku from Belgian side Zulte Waregem on a four-year contract, with an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
The 20-year-old joins the Welsh club after an impressive breakthrough season in Belgium, where he played a key role in Zulte Waregem’s promotion to the Pro League.
Opoku began his football journey with Ghanaian club Great Corinthians FC before moving to Belgium in 2024 to join Jong Essevee.
He later earned a place in the Zulte Waregem first team, helping the club secure the Challenger Pro League title and promotion to the top flight.
The talented right-footed winger enjoyed a standout 2025/26 campaign, registering 10 goals and six assists in 34 league appearances.
His impressive performances also earned him his senior debut for the Ghana national team in May 2026.
Head coach Vitor Matos expressed his excitement about the arrival of the young Ghanaian, highlighting his experience despite his age.
“He is a young player who has been exposed to a lot of senior football in Belgium.
“He will be able to adapt to the physicality, the intensity and the amount of games in the Championship, as we know he is a fast and sharp player.
“Opoku has joined us here in Austria, and he has had his first training session, and we’re excited to have him here."
Swansea sporting director Ben Stevens also praised the club’s latest recruit, backing him to develop further under Matos.
"Really excited with Joseph joining us and looking forward to seeing his attacking potential flourish in Vitor’s team.
"Two full seasons with Zulte Waregem in Belgium’s top division plus being involved with Ghana national teams highlight the ability of this young talent."
Swansea City are hoping Opoku’s pace, creativity and attacking ability will provide additional options for their forward line as they prepare for the new Championship season.
