World Cup 2026 World Cup: Thomas Partey to challenge Canada Visa denial ahead of Ghanas opener against Panama
TUE, 16 JUN 2026

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is expected to appear before a Canadian Federal Court on Tuesday in a bid to overturn a visa denial that has prevented him from joining the Black Stars ahead of their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 33-year-old was denied entry into Canada last week due to ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom, where he faces multiple charges of rape and one count of assault. Partey has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The court hearing is scheduled for 13:00 GMT, with Ghana's Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, confirming that the former Arsenal midfielder will formally challenge the Canadian government's decision.

Despite the setback, Adams remains hopeful that the appeal will be successful, paving the way for Partey to join the national team in Toronto before their Group L opener against Panama on Wednesday.

Partey is expected to attend the hearing with support from the Government of Ghana through its embassy in Canada as efforts continue to secure his participation in the tournament.

The midfielder has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of assault relating to allegations made by four women over incidents alleged to have occurred between 2020 and 2022. A trial is scheduled to take place later in 2026.

His visa issues meant he was absent from the Ghana squad that arrived in Toronto on Monday to complete preparations for the clash against Panama at BMO Field.

Should the court rule in his favour, Partey is expected to travel immediately to join the Black Stars camp and could be available for selection for the crucial opening fixture.

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23. The four-time African champions will conclude their Group L campaign against Croatia on June 27 as they seek a place in the knockout stages.
