Ermines Onyema Makes History as Ghana’s First Dual Announcer in African Swimming and Athletics Championships

Ermines Onyema, a sports broadcaster with Radio Windy Bay (98.3MHz) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has achieved a remarkable milestone—becoming arguably the first Ghanaian sports journalist to serve as an official announcer in both national and continental championships for swimming and athletics.

Popularly known across Africa as ErmBarometer, Ermines shared the announcer’s booth with two of the continent’s most celebrated athletics voices during the 24th Confederation of African Athletics Senior Championships 2026, hosted at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra. The six‑day event featured athletes from 51 African countries.

Ermines, the third Ghanaian announcer selected for the championship, worked alongside seasoned African athletics announcers Oloko Nikoyo Athanase Claude of Cameroon and Geraldine L’ecluse Ameer of Mauritius—each boasting nearly two decades of experience. The 2026 championship marked Ermines’ first continental athletics assignment, and he delivered it on home soil.

A Rising Force in African Aquatic Sports

Beyond athletics, Ermines has rapidly become one of Africa’s most promising announcers in aquatic sports. His journey began with the Ghana Swim League, the President’s Cup National Swimming Championship, and the Channel One TV National Swimming Championship.

His breakthrough came when he served as the sole announcer for swimming at the 2023 Africa Games (held in March 2024). He followed this with back‑to‑back announcer roles at the Africa Aquatics Zone II Championships in 2024 and 2025.

This dual‑discipline rise makes him the first Ghanaian announcer to reach such heights in both athletics and swimming.

Ermines Reflects on the Moment

Speaking on Woezor TV’s Sports Update with Godfred Amoaful, Ermines described the experience as surreal:

“It is massive to be alongside the two biggest announcers in Africa… it is massive to be right inside the stadium at the University of Ghana.”

At the end of the 24th CAA African Senior Championships:

• South Africa topped the table with 9 gold, 3 silver, 10 bronze
• Kenya followed with 6 gold, 5 silver, 7 bronze
• Ethiopia placed third with 5 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze
• Ghana finished 20th, securing 1 silver and 4 bronze medals
