Asamoah Gyan names USA 2010 strike as his best World Cup goal

Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has identified his extra-time winner against the United States at the 2010 FIFA World Cup as his most memorable goal on the global stage.

Gyan produced a decisive moment in the Round of 16 clash in South Africa, firing home in extra time to seal Ghana’s progression after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV, the former Ghana captain reflected on key moments from his World Cup career, including his historic strike at the 2006 tournament in Germany — Ghana’s first-ever goal at a World Cup finals.

“It’s something that will remain because it’s the first Ghanaian ever goal in a World Cup, which everybody was expecting,” he said.

While acknowledging the importance of his goal against the Czech Republic in 2006, Gyan singled out the USA winner in 2010 as his favourite.

“I think that was my best goal. The timing was on point. It was 1-1 in extra time, everybody was optimistic about how it was going to come,” he said.

“As a striker, that wasn’t my best goal I’ve ever scored, but because of the timing and everything, I would say it was my best World Cup goal," he added.

Gyan also noted that his personal favourite goal in his career came against England, but maintained that the strike against the United States stands out among his six World Cup goals for Ghana.

The former Sunderland and Al Ain forward remains Africa’s all-time leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals across three editions.
