‘We’ve come back to make sure our father's ideas never die’ – Nkrumah family

Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has announced the family's return to Nkroful with a renewed commitment to contributing to Ghana's development and keeping her father's legacy alive.

Speaking at the 2026 NkrumahFest in Nkroful in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, held to commemorate Dr Nkrumah's 117th birthday, Ms Nkrumah apologised to the people of Nkroful for what she described as the family's prolonged absence from their ancestral home.

She explained that difficult experiences associated with her father's political life had left members of the family traumatised and fearful, contributing to their decision to stay away.

Ms Nkrumah recalled the impact of an assassination attempt on her father, saying the family witnessed him return home covered in blood.

“We saw our father covered in blood, walking into the house after one assassination attempt on his life. Forgive us if we stayed away. We were traumatised, we were scared, we were confused,” she recalled.

She said the family was now ready to reconnect with Nkroful and play a role in Ghana's development, while also promoting national unity.

“The good news is that we've come back. And we want to make a contribution to Ghana's progress, to Ghana's development, and to Ghana's unity,” she assured.

According to Ms Nkrumah, the family's return is also intended to strengthen efforts to preserve Dr Nkrumah's political ideas and ensure that they remain relevant to younger generations.

“We are coming back to recognise our father's work. We are coming back to appreciate his ideas, and we are coming back to make sure that those ideas never die, but rather, they nourish us and give us the courage to make Ghana better,” she said.
