The Ghana Police Service has rolled out new security measures for top-flight football teams following the deadly the attack on Berekum Chelsea’s team bus.

Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has directed all regional and district commanders to provide armed escorts for clubs competing in the Ghana Premier League.

Under the directive, a minimum of two armed officers will accompany teams within their jurisdictions as part of efforts to enhance safety during match travel.

The move follows a tragic armed robbery incident on April 12, 2026, which claimed the life of 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong.

Reports indicate that Berekum Chelsea were returning from a league fixture against Samartex when their bus was ambushed by gunmen along the Bibiani–Goaso road.

The attackers allegedly opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing players and officials to abandon the vehicle and seek refuge in nearby bushes.

Frimpong, who sustained gunshot wounds during the нападение, later succumbed to his injuries, making him the only confirmed fatality.

The incident has reignited longstanding concerns over the safety of football teams travelling across Ghana, particularly on highways where similar attacks have been recorded in recent years.

Police say the new directive is aimed at restoring confidence within the domestic game while safeguarding players, technical staff, and officials.

Investigations are ongoing, with authorities confirming the arrest of the suspected gang leader and another individual linked to the robbery.
