The Sudan Football Association is reportedly prepared to release Kwesi Appiah to take charge of Ghana ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a report by Asempa FM.

The Ghana Football Association is currently in the market for a new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a string of disappointing results in pre-World Cup friendlies.

Addo’s exit comes on the back of heavy defeats, including a humiliating 5-1 loss to Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, in Vienna, followed by a 2-1 defeat to Germany in Stuttgart.

With less than three months to the start of the global showpiece in North America, the GFA is expected to name a replacement imminently. Reports indicate that Sudan’s football authorities would not stand in the way should Ghana formally approach Appiah for the vacant role.

Although no official contact has yet been made, the Sudan FA is said to be open to a temporary release arrangement. Under such a scenario, the GFA would assume responsibility for Appiah’s salary during the World Cup, with the former Al Hilal coach expected to resume his duties with Sudan’s national team, the Falcons of Jediane, after the tournament.

Appiah remains a significant figure in Ghanaian football history, having become the first local coach to guide the Black Stars to a FIFA World Cup, achieving the feat at the 2014 tournament in Brazil. He has since had two spells in charge of the four-time African champions.

Meanwhile, the coaching race remains open, with high-profile names such as Pitso Mosimane, Tom Saintfiet and Hervé Renard all reportedly expressing interest in the position.

On the pitch, Ghana’s preparations continue. The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico before concluding their build-up against Wales on June 2.

Drawn in Group L, Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Heading into their fifth World Cup appearance, the Black Stars will be aiming to improve on recent performances after suffering consecutive group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments. The 2026 edition will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
