Former Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has distanced himself from the vacant Black Stars job, according to sources close to the situation.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is currently in search of a new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo on Monday, March 31.
The decision came after Ghana endured heavy defeats in recent international friendlies, losing 5-1 to Austria in Vienna and 2-1 to Germany during their March preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Initial reports suggested that the GFA had opened discussions with Regragui in a bid to persuade him to take charge of the team.
However, it has now emerged that the highly rated coach has, through his representatives, informed Ghana’s football authorities that he is not interested in the role.
Regragui, who earned global recognition after guiding Morocco to a historic semi-final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar—the first African nation to reach that stage—remains a sought-after figure in international football.
He has recently been linked with other top jobs, including a potential move to replace Hervé Renard following the latter’s departure from the Saudi Arabia national team after a friendly defeat to Serbia.
His achievements with Morocco, built on a disciplined and tactically organized approach, have elevated his reputation across the continent and beyond.
Meanwhile, several high-profile names, including Kwesi Appiah, Pitso Mosimane, Tom Saintfiet, Regragui himself, and Renard, continue to be linked with the Black Stars coaching position as the GFA weighs its next move.
Ghana will resume preparations in May and June with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as they fine-tune their squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia when the tournament kicks off on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
