The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced that the Accra Sports Stadium will remain closed for additional renovation work.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, the NSA explained that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had requested permission to use the stadium, but it was denied due to an ongoing "structural audit."
The NSA also provided an explanation for not allowing Hearts of Oak to host Nations FC at the venue. While the stadium will remain unavailable for this fixture, the NSA assured fans that the facility will be ready for the weekend’s games, including the upcoming match between Hearts of Oak and Karela FC.
''The NSA received the written request from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) late in the afternoon on Friday, 28th March, 2025. Taking into consideration the preparations and other required protocol arrangements that need to be put in place to ensure that we host a successful game, it was practically impossible for the game to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.
''However, we have engaged all major stakeholders to evaluate the possibility of hosting any football match at the Accra Sports Stadium. In this regard, the NSA will like to confirm that the Accra Hearts of Oak S.C vs. Nations F.C match will not be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.''
The statement further noted that all future fixtures, including the weekend's match between Hearts of Oak and Medeama FC, will be considered only after the structural audit is completed.
The NSA will provide an update once the audit is finalized and recommendations are made, offering clarity on when the stadium will be available for football events.
''Furthermore, all other fixtures including the weekend game between Accra Hearts of Oak S.C and Medeama F.C will only be sanctioned after the structural audit which is ongoing, has been completed with recommendations. The Authority will be in a better position to update the general public and stakeholders on when the Stadium on when the stadium can be used for any football-related activity.''
The stadium had previously reopened for Ghana’s AFCON 2025 qualifier against Niger, but after the conclusion of the qualifying campaign, it was closed for maintenance work. Most recently, the stadium hosted Ghana’s 5-0 victory over Chad in March during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Accra Sports Stadium was last renovated in 2018, ahead of that year's Women's AFCON tournament, which Ghana hosted.
