African Games: $15 million was spent on feeding athletes - Kobena Woyome

Kobena Woyome, the Ranking Member of Parliament's Youth, Sports, and Culture Committee, has made a startling revelation that $15 million was spent on feeding athletes during the 2023 African Games.

In an interview with Joy News, Woyome expressed his concern about the significant sum allocated for feeding athletes, calling for a thorough investigation into the spending during the Games.

"You are spending $245 million, and out of that, a staggering $15 million was used just to feed athletes for 18 days," the NDC legislator stated.

Woyome emphasized the need to scrutinize these expenditures, questioning how many athletes actually participated and were registered for the event. "We need to get a detailed report from the games management system because it should tell us exactly how many athletes came and participated in the Games. All these details must be clarified," he added.

In a related issue, the budget for the African Games has come under further scrutiny after the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) disputed the Sports Ministry’s claim that $3 million was spent on covering the event.

The Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif, reiterated that over $3.5 million was indeed spent on the Games' coverage. In a statement, he explained that an agreement of $3.6 million was reached between the GBC and the Sports Ministry, with GBC being the official broadcaster.

The statement further detailed that $2.5 million was paid to GBC in two instalments of $1 million and $1.5 million, while an additional $1 million was paid to third-party service providers, as instructed by GBC and outlined in their contract.
