The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) has addressed concerns regarding the rental of stadiums for non-sporting events, stating that such practices are not uncommon.
Prof. Peter Twumasi faced scrutiny after the NSA temporarily shut down the Accra Sports Stadium for football matches in December, opting instead to rent it out for Christmas concerts.
This decision prompted Ghana Premier League clubs like Hearts of Oak, Accra Great Olympics, Accra Lions, and Dreams FC to seek alternative venues for their home games.
During an appearance before the Public Account Committee, Prof. Twumasi fielded questions about the condition of the pitches following the concerts.
However, he defended the choice to lease the Accra Sports Stadium, asserting that it is not unusual for stadiums to be utilized for social events.
"Hosting non-sporting activities in our stadiums is a routine occurrence. This is not the first time we've permitted the facilities to be used for purposes other than sports. It's a regular practice," he stated.
In the meantime, Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif distanced himself from the decision to close the stadium for concerts. He clarified to the Public Account Committee that he did not authorize the closure and intervened to address the situation upon learning about it.
"The primary objective of our sports facilities is talent development and hosting competitions, whether national or international. No, I did not sanction the closure of the sports stadium in December. I became aware of the closure and reached out to Prof. Twumasi for clarification," remarked the Sports Minister.
