Ghanaian actor Majid Michel has expressed his disapproval of the constant comparisons drawn between the Ghanaian film industry and Nigeria’s Nollywood.
In a recent interview with Y1079 FM in Accra, the veteran thespian argued that such comparisons are fundamentally illogical due to the massive demographic differences between the two West African nations.
Michel pointed out that it is mathematically unreasonable to measure a country with a population of fewer than 40 million people against one that boasts over 200 million.
He maintained that a larger population pool naturally yields a higher quantity of everything, including professionals and creatives.
The actor further extended his argument to the broader context of global development, stating that it is equally unfair to compare Ghana to long-established nations.
He noted that while some countries have had centuries to build robust systems and institutions, Ghana is still in its adolescence regarding leadership and infrastructure.
He emphasized that expecting a young nation to match the output of historically established systems is a flawed comparison.
He said:
"The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to make. If you have 50 children and I have 5 children, the possibility that you will have more criminals, doctors, good children and filmmakers than me is very high."
"We are less than 40 million in Ghana. Nigeria is over 200 million, almost 300 million. So how on earth would you compare?"
"Why do they have more doctors than us? Mathematically, you should know why. So if Nigeria has more filmmakers than us, it only makes sense because they are way more than us."
"It is also unfair for us to compare ourselves with any other established nation in the world. When it comes to leadership, we are adolescent. There are countries that have been in leadership for over 300 years. They have built systems. We are way behind. So it is an unfair comparison."
