Ghanaian rapper Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has called on wealthy individuals and business executives in Ghana to take a cue from their Nigerian counterparts by financially backing local artistes.
He made the call during a recent episode of the 'When We Sit' podcast.
Sarkodie noted that the Ghanaian music scene relies heavily on organic growth, pointing out that it is difficult to secure financial support even when a solid business plan is presented.
He argued that Nigeria’s entertainment industry thrives because the wealthy are willing to take major financial risks to put their own people on.
Emphasising his point, he shared his experience with Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu, revealing that he was left in shock after learning about the massive sum Elumelu was investing in a young Nigerian artist he believes is the future of Afrobeats.
Sarkodie admitted that although the financial demands of staging a show at the O2 Arena are daunting, the investment is necessary.
He sad;
"What Ghanaian artists do is organic. I give a business plan, even with that it is hard to get some people to come in. But in Nigeria, I think they take a lot of risk, most of the rich people with money, take a lot of risk to put their people on. If I breakdown what it takes to do the O2 Arena, you will freak out, but then we still have to do it."
