Veteran comedian and actor Okechukwu Onyegbule, popularly known as Okey Bakassi, has debunked rumours circulating online that he and his wife have separated, describing the report as fake and disrespectful.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, he addressed the false claim, revealing that it was published by an individual who used his name, his picture, and that of his wife to create a misleading article.
Okey Bakassi stated that since the article surfaced, friends, family, and fans have been calling him and his wife from all over the world with the troubling news. He made it clear that he and his wife are still together, adding that God forbid anything would ever happen to them.
He emphasised that his wife and family are the most important things to him, and noted that they recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Canada.
Issuing a clarification on his wife's location, he maintained that his wife does not live in the United States, contrary to what the author of the article claimed. He expressed disappointment that some people who saw the fake news went ahead to spread it instead of reaching out to confirm the truth.
Expressing disdain, he urged his followers to report the page of the originator of the fake news on the popular microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) for violation.
In his caption, he described the act as disrespectful and sad, noting that out of desperation for views or viral content, someone would spread false news about his happy family. He urged his family, friends, and fans to disregard any story about him and his wife having issues, calling it the handiwork of evil and senseless people. He affirmed that his family is intact and in God's hands.
In a follow-up post, Okey Bakassi shared clips from his 25th anniversary celebration, writing, "With my beloved family, celebrating our 25th anniversary....recently."
He said:
"Yeah, hello. This is my new look. Yeah, anyway, it's for a new movie, but that is not why I'm here this evening. I'm here this evening because of something that is far more disturbing, far more disrespectful. While I was on set today filming a new movie with my colleagues, someone was busy on social media trying to disrespect me and my family. Someone went on social media, one idiot, one charlatan, went on social media and created an article with my name, my picture, that of my wife on it, alleging that we have gone our separate ways.
And since then, friends, family, fans have been calling me from all over the world, calling my wife with this troubling news. Please let me say to our friends, family and fans, my wife and I, we are still together. God forbid anything will ever happen to us. If you know me very well, you know that the most important thing to me is my wife and my family, my children that God has blessed me with.
My wife and I, to the glory of God, we just celebrated our 25 years together, our 25th anniversary, wedding anniversary in Canada. For those of you who are close to me, you know my wife does not live in the United States. She's not in US, as purported by the author of that article. But opportunities like this, you know, allow us to know those who truly care about us. Because some of you saw that fake news and went ahead to spread it, instead of reaching out to me or any member of my family to confirm if it's true. I see you all, I see you all.
So please, if you saw that article, the one thing you can do for me, if you're a family friend or fan, is to go back to the originator of that fake news, go back to their page on Twitter, and report that page for violation. Report that page for the disrespect and the pain that they are trying to cause my family. At least that's the least that you can do. I appreciate all of you. My name is Okey Bakassi. God bless us all. We'll never see enemies like this, those who don't want to celebrate us, but are out to just create fake news to disrupt and destroy people who they did not help to make. Alright, thank you very much for all your support all these days. Thank you for your understanding. But I promise you my wife and I, we are okay. Thank you very much for all the love that we've received."
"It's so disrespectful and sad, that out of desperation to get views or create viral content, someone will go to the extent of spreading fake news about my very happy family. Please, my family, friends and fans, disregard any story about my wife and I having issues. It's the handiwork of evil and senseless people. Please help me report the page of the originator of that fake news on X(Twitter) for violation. My family is intact and in God's hands. Thanks."
