Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj has called on influential figures to lend their voices to the issue of Christian persecution in Nigeria.
She made the remarks during an X Takeover event at Tesla's Giga Texas facility in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, where she discussed her connection to the country.
Minaj explained that her pastor is from Nigeria, which gives her a personal link to the nation, and that she also has many Nigerian fans.
She said she began noticing the brutality with which Christians are treated in the country simply for their faith, and it troubled her deeply. She questioned why the issue was not receiving greater attention, noting that people often avoid discussing topics that are not considered cool.
The rapper expressed hope that more celebrities, public figures, and influencers would join the cause and begin speaking out about what is happening to Christians in Nigeria. She added that she looks forward to doing more to support the cause.
She said:
"For Nigeria personally, my pastor is from Nigeria, so I have a link to Nigeria because of him. And of course, I have a lot of Nigerian barbs, but what I started seeing was the brutality with which Christians are being treated there just for being Christian."
"And I thought, why isn't anyone making a big deal out of this, you know? And sometimes when things aren't cool to talk about, people don't talk about it."
"So right now, actually, I'm hoping that more celebrities or people, influencers, I'm hoping that they come aboard the train to start speaking out about what's happening to Christians in Nigeria. And I look forward to doing more to help in that way, in that cause."
