Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan is celebrating his first child and daughter, Eyiyemi Afolayan, as she turns 21, today, September 11.
In a video shared on his Instagram page, the filmmaker reflected on her growth and offered words of wisdom as she steps into adulthood.
Afolayan described Eyiyemi as a child who has always shown the signs of a good child, noting that she has acted like a child since birth, even when he expected her to act like an adult. He acknowledged that certain responsibilities come with growth, age, and the human journey, and urged her to be conscious of every step she takes and her relationships with people.
"You have always shown the sign of a good child. You have acted like a child since you were born, even when I most times would expect that you act like an adult; often times you act like a child, and that's because you are a child. But there are certain responsibilities that comes with growth that comes with age that comes with human journey. You are getting to the stage where you have to be conscious of every step that you take you have to be conscious of your relationship with people."
Reflecting on his own journey, Afolayan recalled that at 21, he was already working, making a living, and fending for himself.
"When I was 21 I was already working I was making a living I was actually fending for myself and all that, but I'm not going to lie to you because I'm going to tell you the truth."
He also spoke about the importance of caring for others, noting that she will find herself in positions where she must be a good mother and solve problems. "You have to care for people not just your parents not just your siblings your people around you you have to care," he said.
Afolayan further advised her to embrace her role in people's lives, even if she cannot always be available.
"It does not mean you have to make yourself available like all the time, but every time things don't go well you always make sure that you play your part that is what I want you to do."
He further encouraged her to remain true to herself and to lean on family when needed, reminding her that God is her guardian.
