Nollywood actor-turned-pastor, Bayegun Oluwatoyin, popularly known as Woli Arole, has weighed in on the debate sparked by Tony Elumelu's correction of a trainee who addressed him by his first name.
In a candid Instagram post, Arole argued that respect in professional settings goes beyond workplace rules and requires an understanding of cultural and contextual dynamics.
He also emphasised that the way one addresses a superior can have lasting consequences, urging people to be mindful of their environment.
He wrote:
"People should stop saying, in work culture you don't need to add Mr or Sir, Oga there's something called NATIVE INTELLIGENCE please!!! One moment in front of a KING can change your LiFE for EVER abeg!!!!!"
"Read the ROOM!!!!."
The Nigerian Voice recalls that Elumelu had earlier corrected a graduate trainee at a UBA event who called him "Tony," insisting she address him as "Chairman" or "Mr Elumelu."
The incident has since sparked widespread debate on social media about respect and workplace culture.
